From wild adventures to unforgettable street food, Thailand is a dream destination that never disappoints. Whether you’re exploring bustling cities, paradise islands, or hidden temples, there are some absolute must-do experiences that you just can’t leave without ticking off your list.

So, grab your backpack (or just your phone for now) and get ready to book your epic trip—because here are 10 things you absolutely can’t miss in Thailand!

10 Things You Can’t Miss in Thailand

1. Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary 🐘

No Thailand trip is complete without spending time with these gentle giants—but make sure you do it the right way! Skip the elephant rides (seriously, it’s bad for them!) and head to an ethical elephant sanctuary where you can feed, bathe, and learn about rescued elephants in a responsible way.

📍 Where? Kanchanaburi and Phuket!

🔥 Pro tip: Bring clothes you don’t mind getting muddy—you’ll be up close and personal with the elephants!

2. Take a Boat Trip Around Koh Phi Phi 🚤

Picture this: crystal-clear waters, limestone cliffs, and some of the most insane beaches in the world. Koh Phi Phi is the ultimate island paradise, and the best way to explore it is by boat. Snorkel with tropical fish, swim in hidden lagoons, and visit Maya Bay, where The Beach was filmed.

📍 Where? Koh Phi Phi, Krabi

🔥 Pro tip: Go on a sunset boat trip for unreal views and a chance to see the famous glowing plankton at night!

3. Ride in a Tuk Tuk 🛺

Forget Ubers—tuk tuks are the real way to get around in Thailand! These three-wheeled, open-air rides are chaotic, fast, and an absolute must-try experience in Thai cities. Bargain with your driver, hold on tight, and enjoy the ride of your life.

📍 Where? Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket

🔥 Pro tip: Negotiate the price before hopping in (and always do it with a smile!).

4. Eat from a Street Market 🍜

If you come to Thailand and don’t eat from a street market, did you even visit Thailand? The food is cheap, insanely tasty, and absolutely everywhere. Try some authentic Pad Thai, mango sticky rice, and spicy papaya salad—and don’t be afraid to order something you’ve never heard of!

📍 Where? Everywhere! (Bangkok’s Chinatown is a top spot)

🔥 Pro tip: Look for the stalls with the longest queues—that’s where the locals eat!

5. Eat a 7/11 Toastie 🥪🔥

Yes, really. While Thailand is known for its world-class street food, there’s one unexpected foodie experience you need to try—a 7/11 toastie. These grilled cheese sandwiches (usually ham & cheese) are made fresh in-store, crispy, melty, and ridiculously good.

📍 Where? Every single 7/11 in Thailand (and there are a lot).

🔥 Pro tip: Grab a Thai milk tea or a Singha beer to go with it—thank us later.

6. Explore a Temple & Learn About Buddhism 🏯

Thailand is home to over 40,000 temples, and each one is more breathtaking than the last. Whether it’s the iconic Wat Pho in Bangkok or the dreamy Big Buddha in Phuket, make time to visit at least one. You’ll get to learn about Buddhism, Thai culture, and even take part in a blessing ceremony.

📍 Where? Bangkok & Phuket.

🔥 Pro tip: Wear modest clothing (cover shoulders & knees) and take off your shoes before entering.

7. Party on Khao San Road (Or a Full Moon Party) 🍻🎉

Thailand’s nightlife is next level. Whether you’re backpacking or just looking for a wild night out, Khao San Road in Bangkok is the place to go. Think cheap buckets of alcohol, street performers, and a party that doesn’t stop.

If you’re on the islands, a Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—UV paint, fire shows, and music until sunrise.

📍 Where? Bangkok (Khao San Road) & Koh Phangan (Full Moon Party)

🔥 Pro tip: Stay hydrated, wear comfy shoes, and never take your passport out with you!

8. Hike to a Viewpoint for a Crazy Sunset 🌅

Thailand is stunning from every angle, but for the best views, you’ve gotta hike for them. Some of the best viewpoints include Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi, Pai Canyon, and the Phi Phi Viewpoint. The effort is 100% worth it when you see the sunset from the top.

📍 Where? Krabi, Koh Phi Phi.

🔥 Pro tip: Bring water, wear comfy shoes, and go just before sunset for the best experience.

9. Try Thai Iced Coffee or Thai Milk Tea 🧋

Thailand’s take on iced coffee and milk tea is sweet, strong, and seriously addictive. Made with condensed milk and sometimes served in a plastic bag with a straw (yep, really), it’s a must-try for any caffeine lover.

📍 Where? Street stalls, markets, and cafes all over Thailand

🔥 Pro tip: If you don’t like super sweet drinks, ask for “mai waan” (not too sweet).

10. Swim in a Waterfall 🌊

Thailand’s waterfalls are straight out of a movie—hidden in the jungle, with natural pools that are perfect for a refreshing dip. One of the most famous is Erawan Falls in Kanchanaburi, with 7 levels of crystal-clear pools.

📍 Where? Kanchanaburi.

🔥 Pro tip: Go early in the morning to avoid crowds and get the best Insta shots.

Food, food, food. If you’re anything like us then food will be a main priority in your life and what better place to try loads of weird and wonderful foods than Thailand!

With so much on offer you will be sure to find something to suit you! From traditional dishes like Pad Thai to some stranger ones like fried scorpion! And for those true westerners out there don’t panic, pizza and fries are always available! 😝

So many options but where to start? Well we are here to help you prioritise all the best food to try whilst you’re in Thailand!

Pad Thai

One of our personal favourite dishes has to be a Pad Thai. This is a very popular stir-fried rice noodle dish, commonly served as street food but is available at almost every restaurant in Thailand! It is typically made with rice noodles, chicken, beef or tofu, peanuts, scrambled egg, and bean sprouts, among other vegetables. Sometimes it is even served in a pineapple dish, may sound strange, but we can assure you it is delicious!

Foods to try in Thailand

Thai Green Curry

You may have had the British version of this, but there is no better and tastier place to have Thai Green Curry than in the country it originated from! The main difference between Green Curry and other curries is the sweetness. Due to it containing coconut cream and coconut milk it has a very thick and creamy taste which is also a bit sweet!

Be warned they may have it slightly spicier than you are used to, so be sure to ask for it mild if you’re not used to spice! 😃

After your trip to Thailand, you will probably find yourself craving a Pad Thai or Thai Green Curry, so why not try cooking it at home! Surprise your family with your new culinary skills and see if you can make it as good, we will warn you, it can be a challenge to cook it as good as they do in Thailand 😝

To anyone who hasn’t been to Thailand before there is a famous corner shop (literally on every corner) called SevenEleven. In this supermarket they sell toasties that you can get cooked there and then in the supermarket! It’s super cheap, quick and easy and no one goes to Thailand without having one! Open nearly every hour of the day and night, this will be your go to place and the toastie is a great food to cure any potential hangovers 😝

Time for some strange Thai food traditions, however you may find you enjoy them…

Street Food

When walking around Thai markets you will see lots of street food, some normal looking and some may be rather strange such as fried scorpion, fried crickets and even grasshoppers!

It’s not for everyone, but if you’re feeling daring we would really recommend trying them! These fried insects are crunchy and have a unique taste like a popcorn, nut and slight BBQ taste!

Thailand street food

Durian Fruit

Durian Fruit has to be one the strangest fruits… This fruit is very popular in Thailand, but can you believe it is often banned from public transport and enclosed spaces due to its very pungent smell!

Mango Sticky Rice

For those with a sweet tooth, a very popular dessert you will see available in most Thai restaurants is Mango Sticky Rice. This is a traditional Thai dessert made with glutinous rice, fresh mango and coconut milk, and eaten with a spoon or sometimes the hands.  If you like coconut and/or rice pudding, you will love this dessert!

Mango sticky rice, Thailand

Ice Cream

Finally, being in a hot country, the food we always crave is Ice Cream! There is plenty on offer, including some original Magnum flavours which you will not find in the UK, such as a Red Velvet one! We recommend keeping an eye out for these! 😍

But you will see lots of stalls offering ‘Stir Fried Ice Cream’ or sometimes known as ‘Rolled Ice Cream’. Don’t panic this is not actually ‘fried’. It is made using milk, cream and sugar as well as other added ingredients which you choose from a long list, including strawberries, nuts, Oreos and Nutella! Once the ‘frying’ process is complete, it is rolled and served in a tub with toppings of your choice! It’s great to watch them make your ice cream and super tasty!

One of the main things that draw gap year students and adventure seekers to Thailand is the stunning exotic beaches. If you’re searching for the best beaches to visit in Thailand, you’ll find a spectacular coastline like nowhere else in the world and discover your own tropical paradise. With so many amazing Thailand best beaches on offer, it can be hard to know where to begin exploring. So, to get a better idea about the best beaches in Thailand to visit while on a gap year, take a look at our comprehensive guide.

Phuket

If you’re looking for the best beaches in Thailand, a visit to Phuket should be high on the list of things to do. Phuket is the largest and most popular island in Thailand – made up of over 30 spectacularly beautiful beaches. The white, soft sand and aquamarine water of Phuket draw thousands of people to its shores each year. The beaches in the southwest are generally more vibrant and developed. Head over to the beaches on the west of Phuket for a more tranquil, authentic, Thailand best beach experience.

The Coral and Racha islands on the southern coast of Phuket have some of the most popular beaches in the area. The small islands are surrounded by fluffy, white sand and coral reefs, so it’s a fantastic place for snorkelling and diving. If you want something more secluded, head to Banga Toa beach, which is 3.5 miles long. Banga Toa is very natural and undeveloped, but you can find some bars and beach shacks in the south.

Mai Khao is almost 7 miles long, the longest in Phuket, and is one of the more secluded beaches. Mai Khao is covered in golden sand and is part of the Sirinat National park, making it one of the very best beaches in Thailand. It’s a protected area and mostly underdeveloped, but you can find some beach shacks at the north end.

Koh Phi-Phi

Koh Phi Phi gained international acclaim as the setting of the blockbuster movie, The Beach, starring Leonardo Dicaprio. The Koh Phi-Phi islands are part of a national park in the middle of the Andaman Sea, and are home to some of the best beaches in Thailand. There are six islands altogether, but the main ones are Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Leh. You can get to the islands on a boat from Phuket or Krabi.

Koh Phi Phi Don is the only inhabited island, and Koh Phi Phi Leh is home to Maya Bay, the setting of The Beach. Due to the large influx of tourists after the movie, Maya bay was closed for three years to preserve the wildlife and ecology. Maya Bay reopened to tourists again this year.

The most lively place on the Phi Phi islands is Tonsai beach, famous for its party scene and nightlife. Tonsai is a beautiful, buzzing beach dotted with limestone cliffs and coral reefs – fantastic for snorkelling.

Discover Koh Phi Phi on our Island Explorer Tour.

Krabi

Krabi has some of the best beaches in Thailand, if not the whole world. It’s famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, and stunning turquoise sea, and it’s a popular destination for Kayaking and rock climbing.

Ao Nang beach is the main beach in Krabi, with plenty of nightlife and activities on offer. It’s busy and lively because it’s the main starting point to explore the other beaches in the area. Ao Nang is a fantastic sunset spot, with a buzzing vibe in the evening when everyone is returning from their tours.

Railay Bay in Krabi is a spectacular, unspoilt bay close to Au Nang, but it’s only accessible by boat. At Railay bay, you’ll find four amazing beaches with plenty of rocks to climb and water activities such as kayaking. From Railay beach, you can take a short jungle walk to Tonsai beach, which is quieter and more secluded.

Koh Hong beach on Koh Hong Island is part of a national park, so it’s natural and untouched, with a secret lagoon. You have to take a boat to get to this small natural paradise, but it’s worth visiting to see the tropical fish and wild monkeys.

We’re always looking for ways to be greener here at Camp Thailand HQ, so we thought we’d share some of our top sustainable travel tips to help you reduce your impact on the planet while exploring the world! Whether you’re heading to Thailand with us or jetting off somewhere else, these small changes can make a big difference.

Ditch the Plastic Bags 🌍

We all know by now that plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to our planet. While traveling, take a reusable shopping bag with you to avoid unnecessary plastic waste. In many countries, plastic bags are still handed out like candy, so don’t forget to let the cashier know you don’t need one. This small swap makes a huge impact!

Sustainable travel tips

Sharing is Caring 🤝

Instead of buying loads of travel essentials for yourself, why not share with your travel buddies? Split toiletries with your roommates, share snacks on the bus, or swap clothes instead of buying new ones. Less waste, less spending, more fun!

Eat and Drink Like a Local 🍜

Food transportation is a massive contributor to pollution, so cutting back on imported goods is an easy way to travel more sustainably. Eating locally not only helps reduce your carbon footprint, but it also means fresher, tastier meals and a more authentic experience. Whether it’s fresh Pad Thai in Thailand or tropical fruit straight from a market stall, eating local is a win-win!

Keep Your Feet on the Ground 🚆

Whenever possible, avoid short-haul flights and opt for buses, trains, or ferries instead. That’s exactly why our Camp Thailand tours use ground transport to explore the country—it’s not only better for the environment, but it also gives you the chance to take in more of the beautiful scenery along the way!

Sustainable travel Thailand

Offset Your Emissions ✈️

Sometimes, flying is unavoidable (you won’t see us swimming over to Bali anytime soon!). But the good news? You can still take responsibility for your carbon footprint! Use a carbon footprint calculator to measure your trip’s impact, and donate to environmental projects that help offset emissions. Small actions like this help keep our planet healthy for future travellers.

Buy Second-Hand Travel Gear 🎒

Need a rucksack, hiking boots, or a new outfit for your trip? Check out thrift stores, eBay, or even borrow from a friend before splurging on something brand new. Not only is this better for the planet, but it also saves you some extra cash for adventures!

Join the Sustainable Travel Movement! ♻️

Check out our Camp Thailand Tours to see how we incorporate sustainable practices into our adventures. Let’s keep making travel greener—one small step at a time.

Just down the road from your accommodation is an amazing Pizza restaurant, where you get a free beer with every pizza ;)There are also amazing american and mexican restaurants for those burgers, fajita, nachos and sandwich cravings we all get!The local supermarket that is literally on every corner in Thailand is called 7/11. They offer lots of great snacks, but the main thing everyone goes for and gets addicted to is the 7/11 cheese and ham toasties that are cooked right there in the store and are super cheap! They also sell english chocolate for that little taste of home when you need it :)If you are vegetarian or veganthere is also so much on offer, including lots of falafel stands and in most restaurants you can easily request for dishes to be vegetarian! Can I relax? When Camp life gets too much, sometimes you just want to switch off for a couple of hours! No problem :)The accomodation we stay in Phuket has a lovely pool with sunbeds where you can relax, or a short walk down the street you will arrive at the beach where you can read a book and top up that tan

The Phi Phi Islands, sitting just a few hours away from Phuket, are some of the most beautiful islands in Thailand! You’ll find it hard to resist the white sand and turquoise waters of this paradise. The islands first became famous for their natural beauty when Maya Bay, one of its most stunning beaches, starred in the movie The Beach, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, and they’ve been a popular tourist destination ever since!

What to do?

Boat Trips and Snorkelling: Hop aboard a long boat for the best way to explore the islands and surrounding lagoon. Discover secret beaches and amazing swimming spots with incredible blue water. Pop on a snorkel and head beneath the surface to truly make the most of this incredible paradise! You may even see a reef shark if you’re lucky!

Beach Party: Phi Phi island is known for its nightlife. With plenty of bars, and clubs scattered around the island and along the beachfront, you can always be sure to find somewhere exciting. End your night on the beach at Slinky for a true taste of a Phi Phi party complete with fire dancers and challenges!

Phi Phi View Point: The walk up may be a little tough but it’s definitely worth it! The view point overlooks the entire island making it an ideal place to watch the sunset and get the perfect Phi Phi picture!

What to eat?

Our first and biggest recommendation for food on the Phi Phi islands is the pizza! May sound a strange one but on almost every corner is a pizza stand where you can get a huge slice for around £2! There is also great Mexican restaurant called ‘Banana Bar’ which serves amazing food and also has a pool table, playstation and a rooftop bar where they have movie nights!

Otherwise it’s a case of taking your pick of all the amazing places on offer! Plenty of food stands offering fresh fruit and naughty treats such as crepes with nutella! There’s plenty available to cater for everyone! There’s even a McDonalds for those that are really missing home.

With so much on offer there will never be a dull moment while you’re on the Phi Phi island!
